What I Would Do With 40 Million Dollars

Right away I need to set the record straight. Yep, no big bank account. But, I am rich in spirit and that is more important I imagine.

I bought my lotto max ticket the other day and I instantly starting thinking about what would happen to my life if I did win 40 Million Dollars.

First, - I would definitely give some cash to the Addison's Disease Research Foundation or maybe just start a foundation myself in Lisa Marie Bates' name. She is my ten year old daughter who died because she was mis-diagnosed.

Second - I would pay off any bills my son has and buy him a car and a house and a cool vacation. A few cool million would somehow get deposited into his account!

Third, I would pay off any debts that I have and buy myself a very nice house or townhouse. I don't need a mansion! New furniture would be on the list - that is for sure.

I could now afford to take driving lessons for driver's who need that extra special attention. Once I am good to go - a brand new sweet car - will do! Hey, I could afford to buy one that practically drives itself. Yes, all the bells and whistles.

For awhile, I would simply disappear to take my trip around the world. Oh yes! Anywhere my heart desires.

After all the hype is over, I would then help out my many relatives and friends who have bills and pay them all off. Remember, I have to win 40 million - cause I million just wouldn't do it! Of course if I only won 1 million I would have to change my list of what I would do. One million just doesn't go that far these days. I sure wouldn't complain.

I have worked hard all of my life and brought up my family pretty much on my own. So gosh ...... it would be so nice to not worry about money. I am sure I would sleep much better at night.

So please Universe do your magic. I am a gal who is very giving.

Hmmmm well a gal can dream can't she.

It would be so cool to be able to be a secret santa, ho ho ho!

That's it for today.

Finding Ways To Save Money Over Xmas and New Years

As your Diva Money Saver it is my responsibility to try and find ways to save money over Xmas and New Year's. But, hey wait - not so fast - that is an almost impossible feat - even for me.

If only we could go on strike over Xmas. No spending, no partying, no meeting up with family and or friends - how horrible that would be! Well, I am not even going to touch that one with a ten foot pole because for me that would be a fate not worth living. Well, ok I am being a little over dramatic here but you know what I mean. Crap, everything and everywhere you go costs money over Xmas.

Here it is the month to be giving - giving of your time maybe - as most people are laid off right now and don't even have a job. So for most of us giving a lot to charity is not an option. I try to do little things like buy a pizza slice in the subway for United Way. Or, I give some small change to a homeless person once in awhile.

Well, I am happy to announce that I am eating in more and out less. For me that is a big yeah. I have to admit though I do go out for a coffee a few times a week just to inter-act with people.

Meeting up with friends over the holidays does take some pre-planning. If your going to eat out - check over the menu with a fine tooth comb - there just has to be something within your budget. Budget here - being the operative word.

I absolutely hate crowded stores and the Mall during the holidays so I am more likely spending my Shopper's Optimum points. Oh well, now the secret is out.

Gift cards are great for really good friends and family - just don't go over-board. Finding that special gift for someone special can be so darn frustrating when your on a tight budget.

Re-gifting - no - way! Personally, I rather be on the Titantic than do that. Yes, I would never sleep again!

If your really crafty then a nice home made gift would be appreciated but then again it depends on who you are giving it to and what your making.

Just shopping for your own children and their partners, seniors and/or care-givers in the family and the young kids - that is a good compromise. I mean if you tried to give a gift to all of your family you would be in the poor house for sure.

Exchanging gifts with best friends always has me on pins and needles. You worry - will they like it - will they hate it ! That syndrome is very common over the holidays.

My New Year's Resolution is to spend less at Xmas. You notice that this is happening after Xmas - go figure.

What - oh my - is a gal to do?

I wish I could be one of those people who fly off to another country for a month and arrive home on boxing day. Now - that's a happy thought.

But alas, I am one of those people - like everyone else - shopping in the mall at the last minute. Spending money that I shouldn't spend. My head starts to spin and the next thing I know - Xmas is over - my money is all gone - and - then it's "Happy New Year"!

So I will just sign off with a bah hum bug and say - better luck next year!

Become A Baby Boomer Fruga-lista

You know when you reach a certain age you need to become a baby boomer fruga-lista. This is because if your on a fixed income then you need to be creative and not necessarily a cheap skate to stay afloat each month.

This blog is just to give you - the baby boomer fruga-lista - some ideas to make it through the month.

Empty fridge syndrome: I used to find that if I shopped every week I was throwing out a lot of food. If you basically use everything in your fridge before you go out grocery shopping the tip here is your less inclined to throw out a lot of food. I am not saying starve yourself - I am just saying throw less out. This will help you save money.

Eat in more - eat out less syndrome: If you eat out every day it will add up a lot. I am not saying never ever eat out - I am just saying - watch it - keep tabs - or eat out at cheaper venues. For some seniors - they go out every day for a coffee - and I am not saying never do it - as your social life needs some inter-action - otherwise - you might get depressed especially because of cabin fever.

Eat healthy: fruits and veggies are cheaper than a lot of red meat. I find that if I eat greasy food I start breaking out - ya - I hate that. So, I try to avoid that stuff. It could be hormones too - who knows - it just happens sometimes.

To stay out of the mall during the holidays is probably not going to work too well for you. Just don't impulse shop - take a list - and try to stick to your budget.

Going out with family and friends to eat: find out where they are going so you can plan what your eating. Remember, you can always choose a cheaper item on the menu or maybe just have a salad.

If your a movie fanatic try to go to cheap night at the show which is usually cheap Tuesday. Even your concessions are cheaper on Tuesday night. Maybe it is boring but I do watch a lot of my DVD's over and over again so that I don't get tempted into a Paper-view movie which will add up and go onto your cable bill.

Remember - walking is free - and - if your a people watcher and friendly you can run into neighbours - exchange  a smile or a hello - and when you get home you will feel really good. My doggie died some time ago and I really miss the walking with him. Unfortunately, I cannot afford the dog bills any longer so I have decided on a no pet policy for now. The dog bills actually really put my budget into turmoil. Yep, the dentist would be another one. Thank goodness I have a plan. Or, man oh man I would be in trouble.

I don't run in icy weather but I do a lot of exercising in front of the TV. That is free too. Stay away from paper-view movies as that will cost you. Go into all the free TV shows instead.

Curbing your spending will not happen overnight. Sometimes it is a life time of bad habits that we need to stop.

I am all for coupon shopping if you can control your spending. If your for sure buying an item you might as well save from the coupon.

I was trying to become a Coupon Queen but the only store worthwhile to shop where I live is Shopper's Drugmart. Not enough can be said about the Shopper's Optimum Program. Ya, it is a spend to get mentality but if your buying the items that you really need - well -  you might as well enjoy the points.

December and January are the worst months for me to save because your out xmas shopping and that does add up and your pocket book probably will take a hit. Try to create a list and stick to it. Don't over-indulge too much because it will take you how many more months to play catch-up.

People today are paying enormous amounts of money on rental housing. The problem for baby boomers is two-fold. First of all there really is no new affordable housing especially for the baby boomer. Most boomers are now paying about 50% of their income on rent and some even more. Secondly, if you don't want to live in a dump you will be paying for it. Better or more rent control is needed in this city if you ask me.

When you retire you think it will be easy to get a part-time job. Think again. Most of the time the employer will see that you are retired and I think they put you at the bottom of the pile. At least I think that is what has been happening. They don't realize that a lot of pensions are small and you are stuck between a rock and a hard place because Toronto is such an expensive city to live in.

Myself I don't give up too easy. I run a self-employed business that I hope will one day be my Plan B. At least for now I can get some tax right-offs. It also gets me out of the apartment net-working so that I don't suffer from cabin fever too often.

I always hope that maybe I will find a job in writing. Do Blogger's get paid? I tried Squidoo and that is a hard job keeping up with all the lenses you have to create. So for me I now go into the site when I am bored. At least writing keeps me out of the mall.

Forget doing surveys from home - been there - done that - they just don't pay enough to make it worth your while. At least not from my experience.

So between calling the temp agency, applying on-line for walmart, lcbo, shopper's drugmart - I just have to hope one day I will get a call for a part-time job. Oh ya - gave out dog flyers - and - that hasn't worked out too well for me.

So try to watch what you spend - and - don't beat yourself up if you fall down because - you just gotta brush yourself off and try over and over again - until you get good at it.

I believe the Universe will send me some good news on the financial front really soon. Oh, you didn't know I was psychic.

That's it for today.

Storage War Baby Boomer - here I come!

After deciding I needed a little part time job to make ends meet I am really disappointed in the local stores that are walking distance from my home. The name of the game is to save money or learn to live on what I make.

I thought being right before Xmas I would get a call but nothing - duh! Well, if you read how many young people are out of work or doing menial jobs then you kinda get the feeling - it's not you!

Really, can you save during Xmas? Well, that is almost an impossibility. But, you can set a budget and just force yourself to stick to it. No impulse buying!

Ok, so what can you do to cut corners? I decided to curb my coffee meetings with a friend because if you do that every single day - that sure adds up.

Walking around the neighbourhood is free! Exercising in front of the TV is free. Going to the library is free. Ice Skating well  that would be fun. Oh, darn I need a pair of skates!

Forget all the lunches out and when someone invites you out - maybe order something cheap on the menu or ask them to go to a cheaper place. Because if you do this once a week even - it really adds up.

It really doesn't help that groceries just seem to be climbing up in price every week.

Always carry your coupons with you - that way you will cut a dollar or two off of your bill.

So, just try everyday to think of creative ways to save money! Stay out of the mall - that is a good one. Go to Goodwill or Variety Village when you need something instead of an expensive store like the Bay.

Cook more - eat out less - well - that is a no brainer. But, when your a social butterfly that can be hard.

Being a movie fanatic doesn't help my budget. I will try to get to the library to take out some movies for free. Words to the wise. It is one thing to wanna do it and another to actually do it.

I would love to be an extreme couponer but that takes so much work and you need to stick to a plan to make it work. You have to have a ton of coupons and end up in the right store or forget it. You also have to have a lot of storage space! Not to mention that downloading coupons uses up a lot of your ink cartridge on your printer - and - that is not good!

I had to get rid of my storage locker recently so there is a bunch of stuff lying around that I don't need anymore. So that will be on my to do list - to post some of it on a free site and see if I get any bites.

Talking about storage I just love that show storage wars. People bid on a storage locker and they get to keep everything inside of it. Some of the people have become TV personalities doing this gig. Again, you need money and storage space to pull it off. And, you need a good eye to see what would sell on-line or you could become an instant hoarder. I think the show is pretty funny!

The point here is that every man's junk is someone's treasure! Hey - where do you go for the audition?

Storage War Baby Boomer here I come!

The Frugal Baby Boomer

The reason for my blog today is to convince myself that I can become a more frugal baby boomer. Yes, it is very hard these days because once the rent is paid - well - your almost broke. But I do love my neighbourhood and my apartment so I have no plans to move any time soon. I hear that the waiting lists for co-op housing is just crazy.

What exactly did I do that was free today? Again, the operative word is free! Well, I went for a lovely walk through my neighbourhood and did some networking with my business cards at the same time. I did spend the time to tell some neighbours what  my stay at home business was all about. Hopefully, next year that will bring me in some large income. I am working on it. At least this year it will be a good tax write off.

I did do some exercising - and - had apple slices for lunch. The thing is this I do pizza and a movie that I own tonight with a good friend and we go half's on the pizza - so that is being frugal.

Beating myself up over money just isn't going to cut it as next month is Xmas. But, my New Year's Resolution will be to become more money conscious and stick to a budget. It is a little hard when you have to throw in dental costs even if it mostly covered. That is still about $40.00 out of pocket but I shouldn't complain some people are paying tons of money on dental expenses. Prescriptions cost me too but again I am mostly covered by my work plan so that is again - manageable.

Seeking out a part-time job is my new avenue to get some extra income. I applied to all the stores that are walking distance to my place - but - nothing - and it is almost Xmas. I think a lot of stores have seen low sales and they are just not hiring any staff. Even the agency I am listed with - they never seen to have anything worth my while. I will just plug away at my stay at home business and hope that things really pick up.

I think that getting my hair and nails done are a necessity. Yes, us woman love to look good. I can forget about the pedicures for the winter. One thing that really peeves me off is the cost of vitamins - you use to get those covered by your work drug plan but that is long gone. Just like eye drops or anything else if they are off the shelf you pay full price. Darn it all!

Well, because I am a Shopper's Drugmart Coupon Queen I have to watch that too! Sometimes I just stay out of the shops. Being a social butterfly I try to get my friends to eat out at cheaper places cause that can really add up too.

I think that there should be better rent control. They just keep raising up the rents every single year. Not so great for those of us on a very limited budget.

Meeting a great man would be wonderful - but - ya gotta be careful what you wish for. I hate on-line dating but I do meet people all the time through the work I do but so far not the right one. Some people split rent with partners but alas I am single and that so far is not an option for me. I rather be on my own then be with an abusive partner. Once you have gone through that turmoil your way more careful.

So, if every day I decide on one thing that I can do free I think I will be on the right path.

I love the Baby Boomer generation - they are more fit and healthy then ever before - and - they look years younger than they ever did. If only Toronto was not so darn expensive. And, we do get taxed to the max.

I guess it is a mindset to be able to save more than you spend. That really takes some imagination and motivation - and - that is my Plan B. Will see how it goes. I will let you know.

Hopefully, I get a great part-time job - but - I am not holding my breath.

Baby Boomers Madness

When you become a baby boomer you want to retire early - so - you do. That is if you can. I know some companies do not have pension plans and that is just sad.

I took early retirement with stars in my eyes. All the little part time jobs would pop out of nowhere and my money situation would be fixed for life.

Yes I am very lucky that I have a pension plan. The problem is this - you get less money - so you have to budget wisely.

Well the job front did not materialize as planned - not for lack of effort applying for jobs. I think they see semi-retired and you go to the bottom of the pile.

Even the government agency where I am listed. I keep calling them on a Friday and they keep telling me "your on our active list", "thanks for calling in" - but - zero jobs so far.

A lot of CV's are now posted on-line so there is no more meeting the Manager and filling out a store application. Now they  just see thousands of CV's and keep you on file.

I think the problem in Toronto is two-fold. There are the under-employed and the unemployed. So, the competition out there for even a menial job is fierce.

If your going to retire go to tax specialist first and foremost so you don't end up paying extra taxes when you retire.

I will not do anything immoral or illegal - so - no pole dancing for this gal.

My LavaGirl Song needs some more work - so - I just sing it in the shower - so no movie offers yet.

My LavaGirl Novel is still a work in progress - so - nobody is able to buy my fantastic book anytime soon. Yes I have copywrite protection!

If I could get paid to write - well - now your talking.

So here's a shout-out to the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, and the Sun - hey - I'm available.

Well, I did take a fiction writing course at the Chang School of Business and I do blog - so - does that qualify me as a writer? Maybe - maybe not!

Giving money advice - I am really good at that. Sticking to what I am preaching - well - that can be another story.

I still hope to run into that rich, attractive, honest, reliable, man of my dreams - but - Superman is a super-hero and they are few and far between. I mean how many men are going to change in a telephone booth and swoop you in their arms and take you all over the world on a whim? Oh, ya, and protect you from harm and keep you safe!

This time next year my global self-employed business should be taking off - hopefully - in a good way.

You know that Colonel Sanders heard "no", 1,000 times before he got a business partner.

It will just have to be a tax write-off for now. But, you know I am always hoping. My friends, family, and acquaintances know what I am into and they really should call me or refer me because that is how you fuel the type of business that I am into. Yes, it is word of mouth advertising called your warm market.

So, I guess that's it for today.

Baby Boomers and Money

Today, I have declared it as a no spend day. Yes, so I am busy doing my writing and staying in. I will go for a much needed walk later. If it rains I will just exercise inside.

When your a baby boomer it get's harder to save money. If your retired you get paid once a month and it is just so hard to keep within your budget.

Right now I have to stay out of Shopper's Drugmart - the optimum points program is my best friend - but - it costs you to get the points.  If you do go to Shopper's Drugmart I say use the Optimum card because eventually it equals free stuff.

So, next month will be better because I have maxed out my points. Now the secret here is to only spend those points when they have the max pay-out days. So when they will double your pay-out that is when you spend it. Maybe buy your expensive items like face cream or makeup.

I went to Scarborough Town Centre only to find out that all the jobs need to be applied for on-line. That is fine but when you do it - your CV seems to get lost in cyber-space. So much for the old fashioned way of applying for a job. You know - fill out a form from the company and speak to the Manager directly. Those days my friend are gone. I want to work in the area where I live so that is where I am spending my time applying for work.

The age factor - oh yes. You put on your resume that you are semi-retired and guess what - there you go - to the bottom of the pile.

Staying out of expensive restaurants - I do. But, when my friends want to go to lunch they forget I don't have the same money as them. Or, if I am bored and go out for lunch on my own - which happens now and again - I pick a cheap place! Eating out will and does add up. My moto is always eat breakfast at home and dinner. Never ever deviate from that plan. Cause lunch can be a cheap pizza slice or a burger. Try and keep the number of times you do it to a minimum. Again, it can add up but gosh - ya gotta live.

I stay out of expensive shops these days. A little stroll through Value Village can get you a new top or whatever your heart desires for cheap - usually - 10 times less than what you pay at the Bay or Sears.

Don't rent movies! Even watching DVD's you have had for a long time over and over again - will - save you money. Paper-views should be a "no" "no"!

When I go to the movie theatre I try to do it on cheap Tuesday's or you pay a rediculous high price for the same deal. Try to eat before you go - that - never works for me as I love the smell of popcorn and to me that is half the experience of seeing a movie.

My part-time job prospects are few and far between right now. The Agency I call for the government tells me I am on their active list and thanks me for calling in. Well, that has been going on for a few months and still no work. I think there are a lot of unemployed people in Toronto.

The small Shopper's Drugmart around the corner - well - I am probably one of their best customers and yet they don't have enough hours for the people who work there. Gosh they should at least give me shares in the company. I am thinking about applying at the 24 hour store but really I don't want to work midnight shift thank you very much.

Getting paid for my writing - now there is an option. Who, where, when, how? Yes, I will have to research that. It is a possibility but a slim one.

I could sell my LavaGirl Song but again to who, where, when, how? Probably best to keep singing it in the shower but because I have no friends in the entertainment industry I probably won't get discovered anytime soon!

I did attempt to walk dogs and gave out flyers at the vet's office. Handed them out to some pet owner's but no bites. I even advertised on a free newspaper site!

My little self-employed global business  - well - let's just say that this year it is a tax right off. And, keeping my business operating is costing me so far. Yet - I will keep on plugging away as I invested in this and I am determined to make a go of it. Then I can stop worrying about money all together. Hey - I have a ways to go!

No, I won't do anything illegal or immoral - so  - you can forget any of those options.

Even though my psychic powers are within me - sorry - I am not good enough to give readings or speak to the dead. I am more inspirational and prefer to keep that under lock and key.

So, I guess I could put up flyers to do light house-keeping. But wait - I hate darn housework. I have a hard enough time to keep my own place spic and span - which I do. It's easy cause I have no one else messing up the place.

Finding a rich boy friend - well - here we go again. Do I travel in their circles? No! Hating internet dating - well - that doesn't help. Oh, and if I spend the entire day inside as planned  - well - I am saving money - but - not running into my honey! Not that I would anyway. Too bad real life is not like those fairy tales in the movies where everyone lives happily ever after.

That's it for today.

The Millionaire Dynamic

There are so many of us who would love to be millionaire's.

Yes, the Millionaire Dynamic. I think if you scrimped and saved to the point where you have become one well, good for you. What about the rest of us? Lottery ticket please!

The fact these days is that your either in the upper end of the money chain or the lower end. The middle class as they call it - is becoming less and less.

The upper class don't care  - ok - some do - some just don't! So, why is this happening? Have you seen the price of a small bungelow in Toronto for example? Yup, maybe $300,000.00 or even more. Well, if there in rough shape you might pick one up for a lowly $250,000.00. Now, get one spouse or even a single owner laid off with a mortgage this high and it's good-by maybe forever to home ownership.

Now for the rest of us in the lower rung, either retired, has part-time work at minimum wage, or even full time work at minimum wage - there - you have the renters. Yes, try and find a decent apartment or flat in the City of Toronto for a reasonable amount of money. Most are now one bedrooms renting for about $1,200.00 a month if you just rented recently. For those of us grandfathered in years ago our rent is still reasonable. So, no rent control really. There are some really nasty apartments in Toronto let me tell you. I saw a few that were really awful when I was looking.

The cost of groceries has gone up. Now, factor in that you have to eat, and maybe you need prescription medication, you have to pay your rent or mortgage, hydro and gas, car payments, car insurance, gas for the car, house insurance, life insurance, dentist, toiletries, clothing, child care, entertainment etc. Now - you know why your broke.

How does one break this cycle? The answer is slow and methodical budgeting. Yes, a budget that shows you are not in the red at the end of the month. That is my new plan! Now because I have never ever stuck to a budget in my life this won't be easy. But I am sick of being poor - so - I have to. I will force myself to do it.

Some of my social butterfly status is going to take a hit. Well, I can't give up my nails just yet or my hairdresser - that would be just too cruel. But, I can do what all good budgeters do and borrow from my food or entertainment budget. Hey, that doesn't sound like a good idea. No, but as long as you have something left at the end of the month that is what counts.

Getting a part time job for me would be ideal. It would help me get rid of bills and save for a vacation. Now your talking. But, I have found it hard applying for work as a semi-retired person. Yes, it is very hard. Now all jobs are applied for on-line. No more of those walk in and apply on a store application form. Those days are gone my friend. But, this all adds to the poverty dynamic. Why, because no one is seeing you face to face and your lucky if they call you. You know how many jobless people there are out there? Lots! And, this is a big problem in Toronto.

I would shop in Value Village not a problem. Dumpster Dive - no way! Oh ya, no one offered me a  million dollars to do it. Inside joke. Hoarding - no - I am too neat for all of that. I find those things repulsive. Germs man - germs!

Coupon Queen - that status is fine - as long as your buying just what your need. So your using your coupons to reduce the amount you have to pay out. So, coupons are good when used correctly.

Some months you just gotta throw in the  towel and say to yourself - next month - I will try harder and do better than - last month. After all, hope runs eternal. And, you will not change bad habits overnight. Me, I could write myself silly on my blogs and stay out of the shops - now - that will save me money. Too bad no one will pay me for my writing. Hey - now there is something I have to look into.

I would love to be a famous journalist. Yes, all of this blogging - is that not experience? Sure it is, you just have to find someone who will pay you for your work. Not so fast. I love writing about real things - not fiction so much. So that fiction writing course I took isn't really doing me any good.

Yes, the poor gal diaries! Anyone interested? I am after all even in my middle age years much prettier than Honey Boo Boo's Mom and somehow she has made her way to fame and fortune. Oh ya, I live in Toronto not California, or Hollywood.

Maybe I will just put in a prayer to the Universe and pray for enlightenment. We all need that. Or stare at the stars at night in the heavens and pray for a miracle to happen. Oh, your not suppose to pray for money - who knew?

Maybe, tomorrow I will wake up and be in a bed of money. Oh, sorry it doesn't work that way! Not unless your a bank robber. Wow, I am too much of a chicken for any of that business. No it has to be legal and moral.

So the last ulternative my Plan B: a rich boyfriend. Oh excuse me, what circles do I hang out with?

After all of this babble it probably will boil down to me getting my semi-weekly lottery ticket. Good old 649! Millionaire status - here I come!

When I am a millionaire - well - then I can help others. You see - I would be such a good millionaire. Is anyone up there even listening?

Ah, in the meantime - smell the roses. Thank God for each and every day. Love life to the limit. Appreciate one's health. Guess what - you already won the lottery of life. Maybe it's not so bad being poor after all. Does money ever really make anyone happy? Yes - me! Do you hear me Universe?

That's it for now.

I Found a Dumpster Diver in my Trash

Yuck - I recently found another dumpster diver in my trash. How disgusting I thought. But, wait - it didn't seem to faze the guy at all even when I was throwing my garbage in the bin. He seemed oblivious to what I had just done. Now, I did not see him before the swing of my garbage so sorry about that Mr. or Mrs. Dumpster Diver. Yes, can you believe that there are women dumpster diver's too.

Someone told me they personally knew someone who did this and that they were also hoarders. Hey - go figure. What a bundle of joy that must be for the neighbours. Can you even imagine? The only thing going through my mind at that point was rats, mice, racoons and maybe throw in a few bed bugs along the way.

But, what if this is the only way this person could pay his rent or for his or her food?

I mean this is going way past collecting pop bottles when your a kid. You know what I mean. If it was a toss up between begging on the street corners of Toronto or Dumpster Diving in the dead of night - I know I would choose the Dumpster Diving gig. Being a hoarder would probably have to come with the territory - cause - where do you keep all of the junk - good and bad? I am really too much of a neat freak for all of this. My heart is going a mile a minute just thinking about it.

The shockingly good haul this lady found!

So, gosh even e-bay has stuff on it that people found in the trash! I wonder what neighbourhood she is dumpster diving in? Maybe where the rich and famous live?

I mean is this even legal? I guess if it's trash and you don't get caught by the superintendent of the building or the store owner - your safe.

If your not afraid of germs and you have a strong stomach - well - then you can do it.

This lady is a shop-a-holic and her upscale house is a hoarder's paradise. Wow, she could use selling most of this stuff on e-bay. At least it would give her some money back. But, you see - she does not want to part with it. She admits to having a problem where she needs to shop. And, she is a school teacher - wow - I was so suprised. From the outside her house looks very nice but once inside it is a virtual nightmare. Yet, she is a hoarder but not an extreme hoarder. At least she is not hoarding cats, and human waste.

Wow - a lady who is into organizing would have a field day with this lady. That is, if you can even get her to part with the stuff.

Ok, so a word to the wise. If your a couponer to save money - just buy what you need because you can end up hoarding. If you can control it then by all means go for it - but - be careful you don't become a hoarder. Be organized and if it get's too much - donate the stuff.

I don't really put couponer's in the same category but wait - there are extreme couponer's out there. You know in the United States in the year 2008 there were a lot of people losing jobs, homes, you name it. A lot of people turned to couponing and some even stop foreclosures from happening. There are even people out there that teach you how to coupon.

I thought this little clip about Honey Boo Boo was pretty funny. But, you get the point.

Well, unless someone is ready to hand me over a cool million dollars and a bio-hazard suit - you won't find me in any garbage bins real soon! Okay, maybe even a few hundred thousand dollars.

So stay safe, stay well, and see you next time.

Getting Out of Debt When Your Retired

I think the hardest thing to do when your retried is paying off debt that has accumulated over a long number of years. For me, it is trying to do things that are free. Right now I had a croissant and a coffee just to get out of the apartment. Well, there renovating in the next door apartment and the banging and thumping was something else. So, I decided to treat myself.

Again, if your a social butterfly like me you are going out constantly with friends and that can add up. I usually always make my breakfast and supper. Lunches out are my demon. But, because I recognize that this is hurting me - I am more conscious about it and sometimes I refuse to buy my lunch. Go to a cheaper restaurant - that - will help a lot. Cook a lot- that will save you even more money.

Exercise is free. This helps me to keep healthy and doing something that does not cost me any money. Yes, a lot of walking.

I keep business cards in my pocket at all times so that if the opportunity happens to present itself to talk to neighbours and drum up some business for my little self-employed company - I am all over that one. Also, I can write off things off as business expenses.

I am also a Coupon Queen but the problem is - I am addicted to Shopper's Drug-mart Optimum Points. Yes, I get a lot of stuff free but you gotta spend it to get it. So, I only do a big shop in Shopper's when I can max out my points. This way I am getting what I use and what I need for free.

Air miles - I love them too. So, I use my Avion Visa like a debit card - and - yes it does pay off. As long as you pay off the balance each and every month. So, next year or the year after I will have a free trip. Again, you gotta spend it to get it.

This spend to get mentality is not good for everyone because you do need to be disciplined in paying it all off. So far, I live within my means so this has all been working in my favour.

You have to be self-motivated when your retired too. You know the days can just come and go and get pretty boring if you don't keep busy.  I don't have a problem with this as I am very motivated in a good way.

If the problem of gaining weight presents itself this winter - I will join a gym. I think that I get enough daily exercise right now because the weather has been so good and I just love going for walks.

I have been applying here and there for part-time jobs in the neighbourhood. I mean I don't want to commute if I don't have to. The problem for retired people is this: a lot of people are out of work so they push your application to the back of the pile. Christmas is coming so I am hoping that I will get a few interviews. The extra cash would be really nice.

Another consideration is to apply for a co-op apartment that is geared to income. If you don't have anything but your pension then that can save you hundreds of dollars a year. The problem in Toronto is that a lot of people are on these lists and you want to be in a nice neighbourhood and have a nice cozy place that you can enjoy. You have to like your place because your there a lot. I know someone who has been on these lists for at least ten years - well - that is something else.

Hopefully, your health will hold out so that you can do some part-time work. You know that is so very important. Right now like I said it is finding someone that will hire a retired person. You cannot lie on your resume so when they ask why you left a job and you tell them you retired I think it is a blessing and a curse.

Get creative in how to save money. Put your extra cash in a money jar. So, you don't buy lunch - that money goes in the money jar. Or, you sold something on kijji - that money goes in the jar. It will add up quickly and having some savings each and every month is smart.

For seniors who are in such bad shape they need to go bankrupt - make sure you know what your doing. Do not go bankrupt in the year you added to your RRSP. Go bankrupt if you have to the following year. You must be one year past your contribution or they will claw at your RRSP's and that would not be good.

Instead of going bankrupt see if a good budget will do the trick. Or, go to a financial analyst and see if you can do a Proposal instead. You will have to cut up your credit card if this happens to you. So, if you can get a few paid jobs, errands, dog walking, cleaning - that may save you from this problem.

Do a lot of reading - that is free. Go to the public library and get your DVD's. Stay away from paper-view movies. I have my friend pay half if I do rent one. I go half's on pizza too if that is your weekly ritual.

Last but not least - don't give up on yourself. When you pray to the Universe - good things are coming. Tomorrow is a new day with so much promise. If you have your health - you do have your wealth.

That's it for today.

Freebies Are Always On My Mind

As a Diva Money Saver Coupon Queen getting freebies are always on my mind. Otherwise I will have to hand in my crown and I'm not doing that. I am on a roll!

This week alone I got 2,000 extra Optimum Points. How? The Shopper's store flyer had a promo code that I entered on their site and walla free points.

Not only that I got twenty times the points for shopping on a specific day of the week!

Okay you had to spend $40.00 to get the points but I am almost up to $60.00 in points so it is well worth it.

My plan is to get the highest amount of Optimum points and then cash-in. It is easy to see you are saving and here is why. You just buy what you actually need! You were going to spend the money at Shopper's Drugmart regardless. Even if they did not have the Optimum Points program.

The plan of attack is - you hold onto the points - for however long - until they have the points day where you get the extra money for spending on the points spending days. Do not deviate from the plan or you lose out. That my friend can equal to free stuff worth up to $200.00.

Okay, Shopper's Drugmart loves me but I love them too!
Can I be an ambassador for the company? Actually, they should give me free shares in the place.

Next, your work as a Coupon Queen is not done. You need lots and lots of coupons. Right now, I need to see if my Sunday news-paper has coupon inserts - some do - some don't. No sense spending a dollar on a newspaper that does not have coupons - not worth it.

The second plan of attack is Internet Manufacturer's Coupons. Make a list of everything you buy constantly. See if there are coupons for that. I buy Royale Toilet Paper quite often so I would of course be looking for the Royale coupons.

Now be warned that you might have to do a lot of downloading of their specific computer programs and that you may need to re-boot your computer the next day. But, that is just one of the pit-falls of being a Coupon Queen.

Places where you can get free Canadian coupons are:

www.websaver.ca

www.save.ca

www.SmartCanuks.ca

www.GoCoupons.ca

The law of couponing is - never, ever photo-copy a coupon - that is illegal.

Always make sure they are Canadian coupons if your Canadian and vice versa if your an American.

Do not get caught in a long line-up - for example Walmart - and - you find out your coupons have expired. A big no - no !

Have your coupons ready to show the cashier as soon as you show her the item you have the coupon for. That will speed up the check-out.

Use Coupon Queen Etiquette - don't grab or be aggressive in the store trying to get a lot of stuff - remember - be nice!

Know the store return policy and see if they have a coupon policy.

Read the fine print on each and every coupon - very important.

Lastly, have fun - and - if you don't need something you got free - donate it to the local food bank.

That's it for now.

Coupon Queen Madness

Have you ever heard of dollar days, or midnight madness? Well that is probably where one might save a lot of money. I can hardly wait until a store nearby has this crazy sale! I will be there with bells on with my coupons - so look out world here I come!

I have to admit that, I just started couponing and really - I do love it. How can I explain the feeling. It is like going to Value Village and getting a new top for $2.00 or a throw cushion for pennies - both - would have cost ten times that much in a regular store. So, saving money is the key ingredient. And, if you know the regular price of the brand or item your buying - it will be easy for you to spot a great sale. Yes, not just a sale, but a great one.

Many of you have probably been doing this for years and I just started. I can call myself the Diva Money Saver Coupon Queen because it's my blog and I fell in love with the name a long time ago. This blog is all about frugality, saving, getting out of debt, dumpster diving, hoarders - you name it. It keeps my writing skills up to date and also occupies my time - helping me to stay out of the mall - how ironic is that?

Couponing is like a double edged sword - your kinda damned if you do - and damned if you don't. So, if your hunting down free stuff and you really need it - I see nothing wrong with that. Just don't turn into a hoarder.

I have heard stories where couponing got some people out of debt, helped them go on trips, and even saved some people from brankruptcy or foreclosure. Wow - that sounds extreme - but - there are also extreme couponers out there. I kinda love that idea too because these extreme couponers also have a heart - and - some of them even donate food to the local food bank - just from getting free stuff.

Here is a cute You Tube Video I made about my adventure as a Coupon Queen. It is just a little clip - no worries.
Hey - now you know - I am really getting organized and into the fast track as a Coupon Queen Diva. When I have some secret stash of free food or toiletries - I will show-case it - but - I am not there yet.

I have to admit - I am in love with Shopper's Drugmart Optimum points. Sure you have to spend it to get it! But - that is where I buy my throat lozenges, tylenol, Royale Toilet Paper, Dempster's Vegetable Bread, swifters, Jouviance face cream, Aveeno Cleanser, just to name a few things - so - it is easy for me to add up points. Even better is if I have a coupon to add to the sale.

Don't you just feel really good when you get $1.00 off of something on sale? I do! For years I have ignored flyers! What in the world was I thinking? Duh!

I just love the videos of the really Krazy Coupon Queen and many of the other extreme couponers because it does give you insight into how people are pulling this off.

Just like anything else - you really need to know the rules. You should know the store policy regarding coupons - yes - I am sure there is one for every store. I love the fact that Shopper's Drugmart have there very own coupons. But, you do need to download them. But, there are no questions asked with these store coupons.

Make sure your not holding up the line because your coupons are expired. And, don't annoy people by not being organized as the transaction will take a little longer than a regular one - especially - if you have a lot of coupons.

When getting your coupons in Canada order them from a reputable on-line shopping site. I so far have been getting mine from Websaver.ca and from Save.ca.

The .ca after the name let's you know your ordering Canadian coupons. But, just to be sure always read the fine print on the coupon.

I thought I was getting some quality Canadian coupons from Target and they were all American only use and that really peeved me off. What a waste of time and printer paper as well as my poor ink cartridge.

Many coupon sites will only let you order coupons every 22 days. I guess that is to protect themselves and keep their integrity to a high standard.

I got 2,000 free Optimum points just for updating my Optimum profile and entering a promo code that was on top of the Shopper's flyer. Wow - I wonder how many of those I missed over the years?

Maybe if I can be really frugal I can go on a trip to PEI, Vegas, a single's cruise. Hey, the sky is the limit! Also, I would love to go to a convention in Charlotte, North Carolina for a company that I belong to. All of this would be so awesome.

Last but not least - always check your expiry dates - before hitting the store. How awful to be rejected for having expired coupons in a long line up at the shopping mall.

I promise to talk about something different tomorrow - time permitting.

That's it for now.

This Coupon Queen Tells You How To Get Free Stuff

Hey, everyone - free stuff is good! Every Coupon Queen goes to bed dreaming about free stuff - at least I do!

I live in Canada so when your getting coupons make sure your getting them from a Canadian company. I found a lot of American coupons that I had to pitch out because you cannot use them here in Canada. So, be careful where your ordering your coupons from. Likewise if your American - order your coupons from an American company.

In my area (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) Shopper's Drugmart had a special promo code at the top of their flyer today. I had to download the web-site and just typed in the promo code and sure enough for updating my Shopper's profile I am receiving 2,000 free Optimum Points. I can tell you I never paid any attention to this type of thing until I started couponing. Free is so good!

If your from Canada a few cool places to get coupons is: Save.ca or Websaver.ca
Right away you know your getting Canadian coupons.

Just remember - you never - ever - photocopy coupons - that my friend  is illegal.

Just listen in to my You Tube Video which covers almost everything I just said about couponing.

I just love saving money - what about you? I know I have been talking a lot lately about couponing - but - I think it's fun - once you start to get freebies.

My coupon organizer has been getting me a lot of compliments. It is so handy to just carry it under your arm when your shopping. If you see a sale it is so easy just to flip through your little organizer.

A very important tip is to - always keep an eye on expiry dates - not only on your goods that your buying - but - on your coupons. I notice most of my coupons have an expiry date of November or December. So no rush, if the item is not on sale - wait! It is timing - researching flyers - searching for coupons - knowing prices that the store usually sells things at - so that you can spot a sale right away - that will make your job as a Coupon Queen - golden!

I hope some of these tips are helpful to the newbie couponer. Remember, always help others and someday soon - just like me - you will receive your crown - as a Coupon Queen!

That's it for today.

Today I Got My Crown As A Bonafide Coupon Queen

I have a confession to make - I ran out of my favourite face cream - ouch! But - to my delight I had a $20.00 off Shopper's coupon that I could use. The catch was you had to use the coupon today only and you had to spend $75.00. So because this is a day, evening, and eye cream all in one - it ends up being reasonably priced. Glad I only have to buy this once in a blue moon. Yes, it is Jouviance of course!

Darn -  you can download Manufacturer's coupons for not only groceries but for your favourite makeup or face cream. Duh - not sure why I missed doing that.

Last week to my delight I found a lovely pink coupon organizer. I was amazed to find exactly what I wanted from the dollar store. So my coupon organizer was only one dollar! Now, that's a deal. I just labelled it from A to Z - and that pretty well covers every item you could possibly want. The flyers go in the back.

Now to receive your Crown as a Coupon Queen you must help others. So today, I posted my very first Diva Money Saver Coupon Queen You Tube Video.

So, now I will go down in history with the Krazy Coupon Lady and maybe even some of the Extreme Couponer's. But, hey I am just a newbie so I am not quite there yet.

I think that couponing really helps your budget as long as your buying what you really need.

I want to start comparing prices in Target and Walmart but really you do get addicted to getting those Shopper's Optimum Points. You can see when you have $190.00 dollars in points - well - that's a hard gig to follow.

Yet, if you can get enough coupons and scour enough flyers - then - you can find the bargains. Let's say that Ragu spagetti sauce is on sale in Walmart for $1.00 because they do have dollar days. And, let's say that you have a $1.00 off coupon for Ragu spagetti sauce - probably - a manufacturer's coupon. Well, there you go - it cost you zero and you get to walk out with a free sauce. Now let's say you have 4 coupons and there is a limit of 4. Well, my friend you just walked out with 4 free spagetti sauces.

Apply, this formula - over and over again - and - that equals = free stuff.

Just remember the law of Couponing - never - ever - photo-copy a coupon. That is illegal!

I think sometimes we get over-whelmed in the shopping mall. So, it is so easy to spend money. So start thinking like a couponer. If it isn't on sale and you don't have a coupon - pass it by! If you can - wait until it goes on sale - or - when you get your beloved coupon.

Now, I pretty much know all of the brands that I buy a lot of. So for me that is a good starting point.

So, I will just say, my first day as a Coupon Queen was exciting. I just have one problem - I need lot's more coupons - to really save any kind of money.

There is a fine line between saving and spending so even a Coupon Queen has to have a budget.

To all the Coupon Queen's out there - Happy Shopping.

That's it for now.

Being Crowned as a Coupon Queen or a Coupon King

I am not completely sure but I think there are more crowned Coupon Queen's and Coupon King's in the United States than in Canada.

One of the reasons is that with the economic down-turn in the United States a lot more women and men turned to couponing as a way to dig themselves out of the hole.

When your desperate - you will go to desperate measure - legally - I hope!

Nothing is wrong with couponing. But, there are rules to follow.

The number one no - no is: never, ever photo-copy coupons - it is illegal.

In store Coupons: stores like Shopper's Drugmart will send you their very own in-store coupons. I think this helps alleviate fraud and mis-use of coupons. So how it works is: you get extra Shopper's Drugmart Optimum points on certain Points days for spending a certain amount of money. Some people might claim: your spending - not saving. But, if you get to Shopper's Drugmart on the big Optimum Points spending days - you get free stuff. If you were spending your money on things you buy there anyway - yes - your ahead.

The trick to the whole couponing thing is: to get enough coupons to make couponing worth your while.

I am waiting for some coupons to come to me in the mail. Oh, and with some on-line websites that give you coupons there are some stipulations. Some on-line coupon sites will only let you print manufacturer's coupons for the same products every 24 hours and sometimes longer.

So, now your ready! You have your coupon organizer. It can be small at first and grow larger - later. When you get really experienced at what your doing. I got a very nice pink coupon organizer from the dollar store - yep - it cost me $1.00.

Listen how Jordan helps his Mom who became a single parent - how - to save money through couponing. He refuses to let her put anything in her cart that is not on sale, or has a discount coupon. So, you may not get everything completely free - but - you have saved something off of the original price.

I wouldn't be surprised if this young man doesn't become a Millionaire one day. He has the right mentality for success. I would call this guy - a crowned Coupon King.

I also have posted about the couple who were in a coupon Queen contest and between the two of them they got hundreds of dollars in savings on food which immediately got donated to the local food bank. Now, that is fantastic!

Coupon Queen's and King's - keep up the good work.

That's it for today.

Saga of A Beginner Coupon Queen

Yes, I thought I would become an amazing Coupon Queen over-night! I watched a few You Tube Videos and "got how they do it". But, it is not that easy.

First of all, I am astonished at how many vendors these days do not put coupons in their flyers.

Try and fine a Ragu spagetti sauce flyer that you can use in any store - good luck!

Then every coupon site wants you to down-load their coupon printer programs. I must have loaded 4 or 5 and then guess what - in the morning - my computer needed to be restored. So, I am not sure all of that down-loading of coupon sites is very healthy for one's computer.

So let's say that Target has a $1.00 special on Ragu spaghetti sauce. If you can find the darn coupon - save a $1.00 - then you pay zero for the product. It is just finding the  coupon and timing it with when Target has their dollar sale. I noticed that when I downloaded some Target coupons there was not one for Ragu spagetti sauce.

So I have got a lot of coupons - but - I am not sure any of them will save me money.

Plus, when you factor in the cost of printing the coupons on your home computer - using up all of your ink cartridge - well - you just lost out on any savings.

I think I will slowly use my coupons and wait for the ones I ordered to be mailed to me.

Another problem is: how you get to the stores that have the sales.

I have no transportation to Target or Walmart. So, if  I want huge savings then I would have to call a taxi - and - there goes my savings.  Or, maybe if my coupon is still good when I do get a drive to say Target - it really has to be on most of the $1.00 sale items to get anything free. Again, try to find the coupon that matches the sale. Good luck!

Some Coupon Queens have this all down to a fine science but when your just getting started it is very confusing and frustrating.

So, always watch all of the flyers for the sales. Circle all the $1.00 sale items. Then go hunting for those particular coupons.

And, remember your not allowed to photocopy coupons. So, just do it the right way.

You are allowed to download Target coupons for example. But, most sites will only allow you to download 1 coupon per product every 30 days.

Then some coupons are mailed to you - so - you have to be patient.

Lets have some fun and watch a Kracy Coupon Lady in action.
Oh, so here is a tip: the inserts from the newspaper might have coupons. I will have to watch for that.

You notice that she has a coupon binder - cool - that is something I will have to do.

Maybe down the road I will become a real coupon Queen.

Well, okay I did save $3.00 on my groceries yesterday with some coupons.

I can see where people get addicted to couponing.

Take care,

Coupon Queen's in Action

Lately, I have been trying to save a little bit of money. In this day and age you have to be creative sometimes to earn a little cash. After all, cash is king.

I watched a You Tube Video about a Coupon Queen and Extreme Couponing - and - now I think I have to at least try the coupon saver strategy.  Why not? Isn't saving money important? Yes, of course - that's a no-brainer.

I think the hard part is finding the coupons that will actually help you save instead of spend. To find the coupons you actually want to use.

Shopper's Drugmart I have to commend them on their Optimum Points Program. That is a great way to get free stuff. The only problem with the program is you have to spend a substantial amount of money to get the Optimum points. So are you really saving? Yes and No. Yes, because if you were going to spend the money anyway - then - your ahead. No, if your spending just for the sake of it.

Ok, so were determined to start couponing. Now what? Finding the coupons of course. No coupons - no couponing!

Let's listen to a You Tube Video about Couponing.

A Very Smart Coupon Queen

You know what - couponing - is not such a bad idea after all.
If you can get out of debt using coupons - hey - that's great!

This extreme coupon contest was wonderful - because - they ended up donating a ton of food to the local food bank. So, I give these two Super Couponer's brownie points that is for sure!

So I will sign off now and just say I am impressed with this way of saving money.

The next time I see any store coupons I will be looking at them in an entirely different way. No more discarding the store flyers.

My Neighbourhood Dumpster Diver, Extreme Hoarding, and Extreme Couponing

I thought I was going to throw up about a week ago when I saw the scruffy guy in my garbage bin.  It wasn't until I threw in my bag of garbage that I noticed him.

Well, maybe he is homeless I thought. You really should not pre-judge anyone. The thought of the junk he probably had in his home - if he even has one - had a vision of one great big hoarder - spinning around in my head.

Some hoarders are so bad that the Department of Public Health can condemn their living quarters.

I watched a TV show about hoarders not so long ago and I was shocked how these people live. Literally, some are so bad that there is not one square inch of living space for them to function properly.

Many times these people need an intervention of some sort because after all I would put them in the realm of - extreme hoarders.

Everybody has a closet they could clean out but this is rediculous.

Myself, I love organization and neatness so hoarding would drive me up the wall, literally.

I think your financial world and your personal world collide when you get to the extreme hoarding stage.

Maybe it starts out with couponing gone extreme. But, that is a different type of hoarder.

I think couponing is a good thing - just don't let it get out of control. They call that extreme couponing. Maybe it works for some people - but - where do you store all of that stuff?

If your able to stock up without hoarding - then - do it if you can get stuff for free.

Like this lady said, she is going to Aruba because of the money she has saved with couponing.

Again, it can be a double edged sword. If you do not have any place to store stuff - then - just don't do it. And, be aware of it's addiction and do not become an extreme hoarder.

So stay out of debt. Pay your bills on time. Do not pay bank fees if you can help it.

That's it for today.

Just Me - The Diva Money Saver
